FG gathers 120 specialists for a session on AI strategy.

The Federal Government assembled 120 researchers, startups, and stakeholders to kick off the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy workshop.

The workshop is scheduled from April 15 to 18, 2024, in Abuja and is expected to provide an AI strategy for the country.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said in a statement that the gathering signified a crucial milestone in Nigeria’s quest to harness the power of AI for national development.

Tijani said he was impressed and inspired by the many talents in the field of AI that Nigeria possesses.

“The quality of talent of Nigerian descent available in the field of artificial intelligence is quite inspiring, and I was pleased to welcome our 120+ delegates coming from within and outside Nigeria yesterday (Sunday) as we kicked off our National Artificial Intelligence Strategy workshop,” he stated.

The minister said some of the experts had been heavily involved in building innovative solutions over the years, boasting impressive profiles.

He revealed that some had built an ICT platform to support service delivery to over 30 million unique customers and the world’s first intelligent gaming robot.

According the minister, among the delegates is a Professor of Computer Science with over 144 academic publications in information systems, databases, AI, and information security.

“There is also a member of the UNDP AI4Dev Reference Group, a lead facilitator in robot development and automation, and a member of the robotics research group at the University of Manchester,” the minister said.

He added that the owner of 15 patents, who had authored 65 publications, was also involved in the implementation of hundreds of innovative digital solutions across Africa, Asia, and the USA.

He remarked that other delegates included a Bill and Melinda Gates Grand Challenge Winner for using AI to solve a specific global problem.

“An Assistant Professor at Stanford University and President of the Global Black AI organisation.’’

“An expert endorsed as a ‘Global Exceptional Talent’ by The Royal Society, she has published more than 95 research papers and more than 2200 citations in reputable journals and conference proceedings.

“A Senior Research Fellow with Wits University, Atlantic Senior Fellow on Socio-Economic Equity at the London School of Economics, Former Head of Research at the South African Human Rights Commission, and former Clinical Advocacy Fellow at Harvard Law School,” Tijani noted.
